P. Ganapathy Rajkumar, born on April 17, 1965, is a highly educated politician with a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in Mass Communication, an LL.B., and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication. His political career began at the grassroots level with the AIADMK, where he was first elected as a Coimbatore City Corporation councillor in 2001. He climbed the political ladder locally, eventually being elected and serving as the 5th Mayor of Coimbatore from 2014 to 2016. After nearly three decades with the AIADMK (from 1989), internal disagreements led him to switch allegiances to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in late 2020. In the highly publicized 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from the Coimbatore constituency on a DMK ticket, where he successfully defeated BJP state president K. Annamalai by a comfortable margin.
